Vishu, 14–15 April, the Malayalam new year · 25 items · ₹400–₹700 a plate
The Vishu sadhya, item by item
Lighter than an Onam sadya and eaten earlier in the day, with a few dishes that belong to Vishu alone.
A Vishu sadhya is the Malayalam new year feast served on 14 or 15 April. It follows the same banana-leaf order as an Onam sadya but is usually shorter — around 18 to 24 items — and carries dishes specific to Vishu: Vishu kanji, a rice and coconut-milk porridge, Vishu katta, and a thoran using the season's jackfruit or mango. In Bangalore in 2026 a catered Vishu sadhya runs about ₹400 to ₹700 a plate.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between a Vishu sadhya and an Onam sadya?
The order on the leaf is the same. A Vishu sadhya is usually shorter — around 18 to 24 items against Onam's 26 — and carries dishes that belong to Vishu alone: Vishu kanji, Vishu katta, and a thoran built on the April season's mango or raw jackfruit. It is also eaten earlier in the day, after the Vishukkani.
What is Vishu kanji?
A porridge of rice cooked in coconut milk with cumin, eaten at Vishu. It is thinner and gentler than the rest of the meal, and it is one of the few dishes on the leaf that is specific to this festival rather than to sadya in general.
How much does a Vishu sadhya cost per plate?
About ₹400 to ₹700 a plate in Bangalore in 2026. Slightly below an Onam sadya, because the item count is lower and there are usually two payasams rather than three.

- A tasting. For weddings and events of size we cook the shortlist for you before you sign. Each cuisine on the menu is cooked by the chef who will cook it on the day.
- The plan for the day. Counters, service staff, timings against your muhurtham or your agenda, and the venue's rules on outside catering, checked with the venue by us.
